Professor Anthony Leicht
Academic Head Sports and Exercise Science, James Cook University
First, can you give a brief rundown of your career pathway so far?
I studied a biology degree, followed by an Honours and PhD in exercise physiology. I enjoyed teaching and research, which led me to a career in academia.
What initially drove you to work in sports medicine and how did you become involved with SMA?
I was introduced to SMA by my Honours/PhD supervisor, Associate Professor Graham Allen, and developed a passion for research and teaching in exercise science. I especially enjoyed engaging with the diverse range of people within the SMA community.
What is your favourite thing about working in sport? Tell us about a career highlight (or two).
The competitive nature of sport and the pursuit of greater performance have always driven me. As a former national and international basketball referee, I had the privilege of officiating games featuring outstanding athletes, including former Olympians and NBA players.
Has there been any challenges throughout your career that you have had to overcome?
Balancing the many demands of work and life is challenging — important, but in my experience, rare.
Finally, do you have any tips to pass on to junior colleagues to progress their career in sports medicine?
Be open to new opportunities and approach them thoughtfully — you never know where they might lead!
