SMA Order of Fellows

SMA Order of Fellows: Promoting excellence in sports medicine

The SMA Order of fellows was established in 1984 as the esteemed membership category within Sports Medicine Australia (SMA). Fellows represent an elite group of professionals who have made significant contributions to the field of sports medicine over an extended period. As leaders across academic, clinical, and managerial settings, they have a unique capacity to influence and shape the future growth of the sports medicine discipline.

Purpose and contribution

The SMA Order of Fellows was established with the following goals:

  • Differentiate highly qualified and experienced members
  • Establish an elite group within the Australian Sports Medicine Federation
  • Recognise the knowledge, experience, and dedication of long-serving members

SMA Fellows are leaders in their profession who have made significant contributions to the fields of sports and exercise medicine, and sports science.

The broad objectives of the SMA Fellows are to:

  • Promote excellence in sports medicine practice and research
  • Support the development of young professionals, including students, early career researchers, and clinicians
  • Celebrate the ongoing contributions of members to SMA and the sports medicine community

The esteem of Fellowship

Being named a Fellow is not only a recognition of individual achievement but also an invitation to contribute back to the profession. Fellowship provides members with a platform to share their knowledge, guide the next generation of sports medicine professionals, contribute as a voice to the Board on important matters, and shape the future of the industry.

Fellows are recognised not only for their academic and clinical accomplishments but also for their commitment to giving back. This includes:

  • Leading significant initiatives, such as the Refshauge Lecture
  • Contributing to the structure and implementation of conference prizes (including the Young Investigator Awards, which began in 1987)
  • Offering expert industry guidance and insights, including presenting the annual ‘Careers in Sports Medicine’ seminar
  • Mentoring and empowering emerging sports medicine professionals

SMA Fellows hold an esteemed position within SMA, and their membership serves as both a personal achievement and a responsibility to help shape the future of sports medicine in Australia and beyond.

“For those starting out in sports medicine: stay curious, keep learning, and say yes to opportunities. Embrace diverse experiences, volunteer where you can, and build strong networks – these connections can open unexpected doors.”

Dr Susan Keays, Clinician and Researcher, Sue Keays Physiotherapy QLD
