SMA Research Impact Grants

The SMA Research Impact Grant program is the evolution of our former SMA Research Foundation Grants, expanding SMA’s support for research that improves the health, safety and performance of athletes and active Australians.

Through targeted funding, SMA aims to advance knowledge in sports medicine and sports science while helping translate evidence into better injury prevention, treatment, recovery and performance outcomes across sport and physical activity.

The grants are also designed to strengthen the connection between research, clinical practice and the SMA membership community, ensuring research contributes to real-world impact across sport and exercise medicine.

Priority research themes

Five priority research themes have been identified in line with current issues and strategic priorities in sports medicine and sports science. These include:

  • Mental health in sport

  • Concussion management

Applications focused on these themes are encouraged. An open category is also available for innovative research outside the identified priorities.
