Sports Medicine Australia | Committees

Our member-led committees play a crucial role in advancing SMA’s mission. They are responsible for evolving world-class research, developing leading professional development education programs, and positioning SMA as a global leader in sports medicine, sports science, and physical activity.

SMA FELLOWS COMMITTEE

Committee responsibilities:

  • Appoint new Fellows to SMA Order of Fellows.
  • Select the Refshauge Lecturer for SMA Annual Conference.
  • Oversee the Awards for SMA Annual Conference.
  • Conduct Careers in Sports Medicine events targeted at students.
  • Conduct Student Network mentoring events.
  • Conduct the Fellows Dinner (including induction of new Fellows) annually at the SMA Annual Conference.
  • Oversee production of the SMA Order of Fellows newsletter.
  • Develop, implement and oversee SMA Research Foundation.
  • Provide advice, guidance and support for SMA mentoring activities.
  • Provide advice, guidance and support for SMA Board and projects as requested.

SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The purpose of SMA’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) is to provide ongoing and timely scientific advice and expert opinion on current and emerging issues related to the work of SMA in the area broadly defined as sports medicine.

MEMBER EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Member Education Advisory Committee (MEAC) provides guidance and advice to SMA staff on content for SMA’s world-class professional member education program.

SMA SPORTS DOCTORS COMMITTEE

Committee responsibilities:

  • Identify and help deploy relevant educational opportunities for SMA Sports Doctors (with assistance from SMA staff) that contribute towards continuing medical education in sports medicine.
  • Assist with the assessment of any prospective members, or those members who have undertaken course or educational activities.
  • Contribute actively to the SMA program of events and advocacy initiatives, from a sports doctor’s perspective.
  • Assist the SMA Conference Committee to create relevant streams or presenter content that supports SMA Sports Doctors and Committee objectives.
  • Identify membership acquisition opportunities and work with SMA staff to develop appropriate campaigns.
  • Maintain (via SMA) a digital presences for news, views, journal links and abstracts, reviews of latest developments in sports medicine.
  • Work with SMA to develop any program of activity that promotes the sports doctor discipline.
