HLTAID015 – Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy

Course Outline

This course is delivered using blended learning and includes theoretical and practical tasks. Students are required to participate in all course elements, providing them an opportunity to practice and refine their skills prior to assessment. The course structure involves simulated real life scenarios which could appear in the community and/or workplace settings. This allows students to demonstrate application of their skills and knowledge. The following outlines the content to be covered in the classroom environment:

  • Pre-course work – online learning.
  • DRSABCD and CPR.
  • Practical scenarios for CPR.
  • Benefits, complications and contraindications of providing oxygen to a casualty
  • Administration of oxygen to a conscious/unconscious casualty
  • Use of airway adjuncts
  • Injury reporting.
  • Multiple choice assessment.

Student Suitability Statement

Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) is committed to delivering high-quality, nationally recognised training that meets the requirements of the 2025 Standards for RTOs. Before enrolling in HLTAID015 – Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy, prospective students should carefully review the following suitability criteria to ensure they can meet the course demands.

Access Requirements

To successfully complete this course, students must have:

  • A valid email address for enrolment communication, online learning access, and certificate issuance.
  • Access to a web browser and internet to complete mandatory pre-course reading and/or eLearning modules.

Physical and Practical Requirements

This unit requires students to demonstrate competency in high-level resuscitation and emergency response techniques. Students must be able to:

  • Perform uninterrupted CPR on a manikin placed on the floor for a minimum of two minutes.
  • Set up, operate, and monitor advanced resuscitation equipment, including oxygen therapy devices and airway adjuncts.
  • Participate in simulated scenarios involving patient assessment, use of a bag-valve-mask (BVM), and the administration of oxygen.

These practical components are essential for assessment and cannot be omitted or simulated in non-physical ways.

Fitness for Training

Due to the physically and technically demanding nature of HLTAID015, students must:

  • Have the physical capability to complete extended CPR efforts and equipment handling.
  • Be able to kneel, bend, lift and manage airway equipment safely and effectively in line with realistic workplace expectations.

If you have any condition (temporary or permanent) that may impact your participation, we encourage early contact with SMA. We will review your situation and discuss reasonable adjustments, where possible, while maintaining the integrity of assessment requirements.

Prerequisites

Please note: HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid is a prerequisite for this course. You may be asked to provide evidence of prior completion.
