Feb 28, 2019

Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Craig Knox as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Commenting on the appointment, SMA Board Chairman, Dr Andrew Jowett said, “as a highly experienced association executive, Craig will bring significant strategic capability to the role. He has held multiple executive and leadership roles across the Australian exercise, fitness and physical activity sectors with great success. His experience aligns perfectly with SMA’s vision of ‘encouraging healthy participation and performance in sport and physical activity’ and with the National Sports Plan ‘to build a more active Australia.’”

After establishing businesses in corporate fitness and publishing, Knox held a key long-term role as Executive General Manager at Fitness Australia and has also held management and leadership positions at Vicfit, Fitness Victoria and most recently at Exercise and Sports Science Australia. At Fitness Australia, Knox led the national industry standards and registration platform and established key industry initiatives across research, education, government funded projects and health partnerships.

“Craig has a uniquely broad set of skills honed through his experience in business and association leadership which includes an impressive track record in developing membership organisations, high performing teams, innovative partnerships and product development,” Dr Jowett said.

“His significant experience in physical activity promotion and vocational education will also be a great asset in leadership for SMA. We are very excited at the prospect of Craig applying some new innovations to our existing programs and building substantial value for our expanding multi-disciplinary network and membership.

“Craig’s appointment represents the perfect fit for SMA and our strategic path. Understandably, we are very excited with his appointment and look forward to his commencement in April,” Dr Jowett said.
