Sports Medicine Australia is pleased to announce Dr Susan White as this year’s Sir William Refshauge Lecture at the 2022 SMA Conference, taking place from November 16-19 at the scenic RACV Royal Pines Resort in the Gold Coast.

Dr White is a highly renowned Specialist Sports and Exercise Physician, and we are absolutely thrilled to have her present at this year’s face-to-face Conference!
The Australian Sports Medicine Federation (ASMF) Order of Fellows helped us bring Dr White to the Conference and the committee is grateful that she accepted the invite on their behalf.

Dr White has worked in both private practice multidisciplinary sports medicine clinics, hospital-based sports medicine, and Institutes of Sport over the last 30 years. She is currently the Director of Performance Health Services and Chief Medical Officer at the Victorian Institute of Sport.

Dr White has been to multiple Paralympic, Olympic, Commonwealth Games and World Championships in roles ranging from Team Physician to Medical Director as well as Organising Committees and Anti-Doping Coordination. She has been a member of the Australian Olympic and Paralympic Medical Committees. She has recently returned to her role as Chief Medical Officer for Australian Netball and has also held this role for Swimming Australian and Victorian Rowing.

She was a member of the SMA Women in Sport committee for many years and played a major role in developing the Exercise in Pregnancy guidelines, particularly in relation to contact sport.

Dr White was an inaugural member of the Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee in 1999, and became Chair in 2013, a role she still holds. Susan is also Chair of WADA’s Therapeutic Use Expert Advisory Group and has had previous roles with FINA’s Doping Control Review Board and the International Paralympic Committee.

Dr White is on the Editorial Board of Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine and is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Monash University in Melbourne. She was made a Fellow of Monash University in 2016 and a Member of the Order of Australia in 2019, recognising her contribution to sports medicine and anti-doping.
