SMA and ACT Sport and Recreation, invite you to join us for the online event, ‘Heat and Smoke’, presented by Professor Ollie Jay and Dr David Hughes.

Ollie is Professor of Heat and Health, and Director of the Heat and Health Research Incubator in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at The University of Sydney. His presentation will explore:

  • What happens when the human body is exposed to extreme heat.
  • Environmental contributors to heat stress.
  • Factors that increase and decrease vulnerability.
  • Managing heat stress risk in sport during the Australian summer.

David is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician, current Chief Medical Officer of the AIS, and Chair of the Australian Olympic Committee Medical Commission. David will cover:

  • Clinical presentation of heat illness.
  • Assessment and management of heat illness.
  • Challenges of exercise in bushfire smoke.

Speakers

Ollie Jay is Professor of Heat and Health and Director of the Heat and Health Research Incubator in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at The University of Sydney. He is a NHMRC Investigator Grant recipient for his research program entitled “Heat and Health: Building resilience to a warming planet across the human lifespan”

Ollie has led several large-scale projects that have directly influenced international public health heatwave policies in Australia, the United States and Europe. He has also led extreme heat policy development for Sports Medicine Australia, Tennis Australia (Australian Open), and Cricket Australia. He was recently profiled by The Lancet in their 2021 Heat & Health Series, and his research program was featured in a 2020 Special Issue of Science (Cooling in a Warming World) highlighting its lead global contribution to protecting society’s most vulnerable to the heat.

To date, Ollie has a career total of >180 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Lancet, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Lancet Planetary Health, Nature Communications, Nature Reviews Disease Primers, Journal of Physiology (London), Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise, and Journal of Applied Physiology.

Dr David Hughes is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician with over 30 years’ of experience working in high-performance (HP) sport. He is currently Chief Medical Officer of the AIS and Chair of the Australian Olympic Committee Medical Commission.

His sport sector experience includes International Rugby, the NRL, English Premier League football, International Women’s Basketball, and Australian Open Tennis. David attended London in 2012 as Team Physician for the Australia Opals Women’s Basketball Team. He was Medical Director for both Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He is a former President of the Australasian College of Sport & Exercise Physicians (ACSEP).

Key areas of David’s current work includes optimising collaboration, information exchange and peer support within the National HP Sport CMOs network, and delivering system-wide protocols to address athlete health/safety and ethical/integrity challenges in high-performance sport.
