Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) is the sum of its members. Our members are the reason why SMA is widely acknowledged internationally as a leading multidisciplinary sports medicine body.
SMA members come from all walks of life – from pre-eminent academics and practitioners to sports trainer members who help make sure that everyone playing sport is playing safely. SMA members are literally the “team behind the team”.

Multidisciplinary Organisation
SMA is Australia’s only peak national multidisciplinary member organisation that provides leadership in the areas of sports exercise and medicine, sports injury, physical activity, sports exercise and science, and the healthy performance and participation of Australians in physical activity and sport. Members of SMA are part of a truly unique multidisciplinary organisation, bringing together the various sports science and medicine discipline groups in Australia to advance the health of all Australians and prevent lifestyle disease.
Conferences, Networking and Professional Development Events
A large part of SMA’s activity is devoted to ensuring members have access to quality conference, networking and professional development opportunities. SMA members are able to attend these events at a substantially discounted rate.
Publications
Most members are provided with free access to SMA’s member publication, Sport Health. Sport Health continues to be the leading industry magazine for the latest in sports medicine, sports science, and health and well-being, including the reduction in lifestyle diseases for the general community through active participation in sport and physical activity.
Research
SMA provides free online subscriptions to leading sports medicine journal, The Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport (JSAMS), and its companion open-access journal, JSAMS Plus.

SMA members have the opportunity to access a range of discounts such as the ASICS professional buyer program and selected merchandise.
Fellowship
The Order of ASMF Fellows’ was established in 1984. The Fellows’ are the elite group within Sports Medicine Australia. SMA professional member are eligible to apply for fellowship with SMA.
Practice Branding
Many SMA members use the SMA logo and name on business cards and displayed in their practice to boost their profile and encourage referral.
Board and Voting
SMA professional members are eligible to vote at AGMs and to stand for elected director positions.
Grants
The SMA Research Foundation has been established to provide support to young postgraduate researchers engaged in sports medicine and lifestyle disease prevention research. SMA Research Foundation Grants (which are to the value of up to $2000) are designed to support research conducted by postgraduate students and postgraduate practitioners for the purpose of advancing research in sports medicine and its relationship with lifestyle disease prevention. The grant is administered by the Sports Medicine Australia Research Foundation. Applicants for SMA Research Foundation Grants must be a professional or student member of Sports Medicine Australia.
