Level One Sports Trainer

This course is designed for people with a keen interest in Sports Medicine.  Upon completion, participants will be competent in Injury Prevention Techniques, Initial Injury Management, Preparation of Athletes for competition and more.

Prerequisites

Current Sports and/or Apply First Aid Certificate (required before attendance)

Current CPR Certificate (required before attendance)

Minimum age 16 years

Course Content

The course covers the following units over sixteen hours:

Sports Trainer in Action

Principles of Injury Management

Basic Structure & Function of the Musculo-Skeletal System

Warm-up, Cool down and stretching

Drugs in Sport

Common sporting illnesses & injuries (hard and soft tissue, overuse injuries)

Nutrition (eating for sports performance)

Common medical conditions affecting athletes

Basic Wound Management

Moving an injured athlete – Patient transport (Methods, conscious horizontal and standing spinal injuries)

Sports Taping (Materials, taping hand i.e. finger and thumb, taping of the ankle and ankle bracing)

The course will run from 8.30am – 6pm on Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of October, with morning, afternoon and lunch breaks.

Assessment

Taping of ankle and thumb

Scenario assessment at end of course (which may include slings, bandages, TOTAPS and moving an injured athlete)

Workbook (Filled in throughout the course)
