Working as part of the Sports Care Team

Sports Care is a specialised service that Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) provides to schools, sporting clubs, associations and organisations, that are required to have medical and first aid coverage at their sport or recreation event.

SMA is always looking for Sports Trainers, Doctors and Nurses to work as part of our Medical Coverage Team.  We offer opportunities with local sporting organisations through to involvement with International events.

How can I get involved?

What qualifications do I need to have?

SMA’s Sports Care team consists of a range of people with different qualifications. We have SMA Trainer Sports Trainers (Level 1 & 2) as well as medical professionals such as Doctors, Nurses, Chiropractors & Physiotherapists.

Do I get paid?

Whilst this is a voluntary service, SMA generally pays its personnel an honorarium dependant on their qualifications.

As some events can last only 1 -3 hours, you are paid a minimum of $50 an event in order to cover your expenses.

Nurses who have completed SMA’s Sports Trainer Course for Registered Nurses are paid $30/hr. If you are a registered nurse but not completed the SMA course for nurses, payment is $25/hr.

Are there any specific uniform requirements?

Yes there are. Staff working on behalf of SMA are requested to wear the Sports Care uniform consisting of a yellow and red ‘Sports Trainer’ polo and either black shorts or black tracksuit pants. An ID badge is also required and will be supplied for you to wear when representing SMA.

Uniform costs are as follows:

Short sleeved shirt – $39.00

Long sleeved shirt – $42.50

Uniform costs can be deducted from your pay and can be used as a tax deduction!

What hours will I be required to work?

The beauty of Sports Care is that youu pick and choose to work the events that suit you! Each week, the Sports Care coordinator will email all staff a list of upcoming event details and you let us know which events you wish to cover. Perfect if you are studying or have another part time job!

Do I need insurance?

All persons undertaking Sports Care on behalf of SMA (WA Branch) must take out Sports Trainer insurance. SMA has been able to negotiate a special rate for Sports Trainer Membership, which includes Sports Trainer insurance. The Sports Trainer insurance will cover you for activities undertaken by you when acting on behalf of Sports Medicine Australia (WA Branch), as well any other events you may cover as a Sports Trainer (eg. your local sports club).

Your Sports Trainer insurance policy will provide the following cover:

* Sports Liability Cover

* Public Liability

* Professional Indemnity

* Products Liability

* Personal Accident

* Capital Benefits (death & total disablement)

* Loss of Income

* Medical Benefits

The membership including insurance, is valid for 12 months from the date you join and costs $160 or $140 for students. There are many Sports Trainer member benefits as well. You can view these through our National website or contact our office for more information.

Do I need a Working with Children check?

Yes, you do. To strengthen the protection of children in WA, the Government has introduced new laws requiring people (including volunteers) to have a Working with Children Check. The application fee is $10.00 and is payable when first applying and when renewing a Check (every three years). You can pick up a application form from an Australia Post outlet.
