Sports First Aid Lecturers wanted
SMA-ACT provides first aid course, for both the community and schools and is looking for trainers to teach the first aid courses, HLTFA301B Apply First Aid. We are also looking for professional members wishing to assist with the teaching of the moduels within the Level 1 Sports Trainers course.

Sports First Aid Coverage positions
SMA-ACT provides a Sports First Aid coverage service which is available to schools and the community ensuring that early injury management at events is provided to help event organisers fulfill their duty of care. SMA-ACT coordinates a team of Sports Trainers and other Medical Professionals to cover the clients’ needs.

What qualifications do I need to have?
SMA’s Sports Coverage team consists of a range of people with different qualifications. We have SMA Trainer Sports Trainers (Level 1 & 2) as well as medical professionals such as Doctors, Nurses, Chiropractors & Physiotherapists.
How much do I get paid?
SMA-ACT generally pays its Sports Trainers an honorarium. Level 1 Sports Trainers are paid $16/hr and Level 2 Sports Trainers are paid $19/hr. This payment will be increase from 1st July 2010.
As some events can last only 1 hour, you are paid a minimum of 2 hours at an event in order to cover your expenses.
Are there any specific uniform requirements?
Yes there are. Staff working on behalf of SMA are requested to wear the Sports Coverage uniform consisting of a yellow and red ‘Sports Trainer’ polo and either black shorts or black tracksuit pants. An ID badge is also required and will be supplied for you to wear when representing SMA.
Costs are as follows: Long and Short sleeved shirt – $45.00. Uniform costs can be deducted from your pay and can be used as a tax deduction!
What hours will I be required to work?
The beauty of Sports Coverage is that you pick and choose to work the events that suit you! Each week, the Sports Coverage coordinator will email all contacts a list of upcoming event details and you let us know which events you wish to cover. Perfect if you are studying or have another part time job!
Do I need insurance?
All persons undertaking Sports Coverage on behalf of SMA (ACT Branch) must take out Sports Trainer insurance. SMA has been able to negotiate a special rate for Sports Trainer Membership which includes Sports Trainer insurance. The Sports Trainer insurance will cover you for activities undertaken by you when acting on behalf of Sports Medicine Australia (ACT Branch), as well any other events you may cover as a Sports Trainer (eg. your local sports club).
Your Sports Trainer insurance policy will provide the following cover:
• Sports Liability Cover
• Public Liability
• Professional Indemnity
• Products Liability
• Personal Accident
• Capital Benefits (death & total disablement)
• Loss of Income
• Medical Benefits

Do I need a Working with Children Police check?
Yes, you do. To strengthen the protection of children in ACT, the Government has laws requiring people (including volunteers) to have a Working with Children Check. The application fee is $33.00 and is payable when first applying and when renewing a Check (every three years). You can pick up an application form from an Australia Post outlet.

Sports Medicine Australia recommends all clubs / individuals looking to employ a Sports Trainer ensure they check the Sports Trainer has current Sports Trainer, First Aid and CPR qualifications. It is also recommended that the employer ensures the Sports Trainer has current insurance through Sports Medicine Australia. Any Sports Trainer who is working without current qualifications is not an accredited Sports Trainer.
