2016 SMA CONFERENCE

Awards

The Australian Sports Medicine Federation Fellows awards started in 1985 initiated by The Order of A.S.M.F. Fellows’ (established in 1984). The Fellows’ are the elite group within Sports Medicine Australia. The awards started out with the Organon-Fellows Young Investigators Award for the best scientific paper at the conference for an investigator under 35 years of age. This award was designed to encourage young investigators in Australia to present their work at the ASMF conferences and has since developed into five New Investigator awards with three winners gaining the opportunity to present their work at the American College of Sports Medicine Meeting. The second original award was the Organon-Fellows Award for the best scientific paper in the ‘open’ category. Some previous award winners include:

  • 1988 Organon-Fellows Young Investigators Award – Mr Mark Forwood, The University of Queensland (now a Professor at Griffith University)
  • 1990 ASMF Fellows best open paper – Dr Wendy Brown, University of Newcastle (now a Professor at The University of Queensland)
  • 1996 Best Conference Paper (Clinical) – Ms Jill Cook, Victorian Institute of Sport (now an Associate Professor at Deakin University)
  • 1998 Wendy Ey Award for the Best Paper on a Women in Sport Issue – Ms Sandra Hunter, University of Sydney (now an Associate Professor at Marquette University, USA)

The ASICS Medal awarded for the best conference paper overall was first awarded in 2003. To view the winners of this award please visit the ASICS Medal webpage.

29 years ago, the researchers submitting abstracts were competing for one best paper and one best young investigator prize. Thanks to the initial support provided by the ASMF Fellows (collectively and individually) and supplemented by support from our sponsors, those two awards have grown into 14 prestigious awards with a total prize pool to fund future research of more than $21,500.
