ICPAPH 2012 promises to be an innovative, important exchange of science and policy work on physical activity and public health, focusing on the theme of “Active futures – Evidence informing change”.

The format of ICPAPH 2012 will be slightly different from that used in previous Congresses, with less focus on symposia, and greater focus on oral presentations and posters from all levels of researchers, practitioners and policy makers.

At the last ICPAPH conference in Toronto in 2010, more than 70 symposium proposals were received, and 28 were selected for the program.  This meant that there was less room for ‘free’ individual oral papers in the program.  At ICPAPH 2012 in Sydney the only symposia will be those invited by the organisers; these will be organised by the active ISPAH councils.  In 2012 there will be one plenary keynote speaker, additional invited keynote presentations, several ‘tutorial’ lectures, debates, discussion forums and workshops.  All will be led by world leading experts, and will be characterised by controversial evidence and challenging issues, with lots of debate and discussion.

The ICPAPH 2012 program will include many opportunities for individual oral and poster presentations.  Submissions will be grouped by the scientific committee into themed sessions – with space on the program allocated to the topic areas that receive the most submissions.

Abstract submission deadline: Midnight 31 March 2012 Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time

Notification to authors: 31 May 2012

Deadline for registration for presenting authors: 31 August 2012

Reviewing

All abstracts will be reviewed by Scientific Committees, which will make recommendations as to the type of presentation (oral or poster).

  • The Committees will allocate papers to oral and poster sessions according to:
    • Assessment of the abstract by reviewers (with blinding of authors)
    • Innovation and importance for the field
    • Topicality and ‘fit’ with the program
    • Program constraints
  • The final decision rests with the Scientific Committees. The Committees reserve the right to specify the format via which the presentation is to be made. The number of oral presentations is limited.

Presentation

  • Individuals will be allowed to present (ie be first author on) a maximum of TWO oral presentations and TWO posters at the Conference. Individuals may be named as co-authors on additional papers / posters.
  • Oral presentations will be allocated to sessions with varied formats. These will include long oral presentations (8 minutes with 2 minutes for questions), short oral presentations (3.5 minutes with 1.5 minutes for questions), panels, symposia and other formats as judged by the committee.
  • Session Chairs will facilitate the timing of each presentation to ensure that these times are strictly adhered to and that there is opportunity for questions.
  • Posters must be a maximum of AO in size (Portrait – 0.84 metres wide x 1.18 metres high).

Submitters will be notified on 31 May 2012 if their abstracts have been accepted for presentation and the type of presentation allocated.
